Primary PE & Sports Premium WHOLE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT AWARD!
Herefordshire and Worcestershire Primary schools recognised through Primary PE and Sport Premium Awards 2020
Awarded by the Department for Education, the Primary PE and Sport Premium fund aims to increase the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision in primary schools resulting in an increase in participation levels.
Building on the success of previous years, 2020 saw even more schools apply, with innovative and credible methods for engaging pupils in PE and extra-curricular physical activity opportunities. Schools from across Herefordshire and Worcestershire had the opportunity to submit best practice examples to demonstrate their contribution to sport and physical activity across three categories: Upskilling Staff, Whole School Improvement, Physical Activity and Health Enhancing Initiatives.
After much debate and close competition, Active Herefordshire and Worcestershire is thrilled to announce the category winners:
Whole School Improvement - Much Birch CE Primary School, Hereford
Having identified a lack of physical activity beyond compulsory PE lessons, Much Birch recognised an opportunity to reduce sedentary behaviour improve the quality of physical activity for all pupils, through active learning. Consequently, 'Forest School' was introduced to the curriculum, utilising school grounds and the local environment and helping to address playground disputes. Through Forest School, pupils are encouraged to foster resilience, build confidence, understand risk and become independent learners, improve their physical, social, cognitive, linguistic, emotional, social and spiritual aspects and develop emotional intelligence. Through the PPSP funding, Much Birch has successfully trained 5 staff members to become Forest School practitioners, establish a clear link between Forest School and Physical Education, adopt and adapt Forest School methodology for PE delivery.
