Phonics

In the Early Years Much Birch recognises that phonics plays an integral role in the teaching of reading and writing. Keeping up to date with educational research informs our planning and organisation of the Early Years class.

Bold Beginnings: The Reception Curriculum in a sample of Good and Outstanding Primary Schools. Jan 2017.

“All primary schools should… make sure that the teaching of reading, including the systematic synthetic phonics, is the core purpose of the Reception Year.”

The Reading Framework. Teaching the foundations of literacy. Jan 2022

“Evidence shows that teaching phonics is the best way to teach children to read.”

With this in mind the teaching of phonics begins from the moment the children start full-time. It progresses in length of time as the children are able to sit and focus. It follows a systematic teaching programme. At Much Birch we follow the Read Write Inc. Programme.
